Stan Romanek declared competent to stand trial

Stan learned today that Stan Romanek has been deemed competent to stand trial following his arrest in February on charges of child pornography possession. A pretrial has been set for Jan. 21, 2015, where the judge will review the case to determine if there is sufficient evidence to move to trial.

The pretrial was delayed due to injuries Stan sustained during an attack on February 24, 2014, which included a head injury, a cut to his right arm that required 10 stitches, a fractured orbital bone, a broken tooth, internal bruising on his liver and a significant disruption in his cognitive abilities.

The defense attorney had Stan evaluated by a psychologist in July to determine if he was mentally fit to stand trial following his injuries, which, according to conversations we had with both Stan and Lisa at the time, made it difficult for Stan to process information and communicate clearly with his attorney. Based on these challenges, Lisa shared that the only desire was to get Stan to a point where he could clearly understand and process information before moving forward.

“We never wanted to avoid a trial,” Lisa said. “Our goal all along was for Stan to go through a restorative process that would allow his brain to heal and function clearly. He just wanted time to heal his brain so he would be able to defend himself from these charges.”

When the July defense psychologist report claimed Stan Romanek was not yet competent to stand trial, the DA requested a second review, hiring a psychologist to conduct an evaluation in September.

On Monday, December 1 — which happened to be Stan’s birthday — the two psychologists appeared in court to state their evaluations before the judge, and, according to Lisa, it was a grueling day of significantly opposing points of view.

My assessment of what Lisa shared about Monday’s testimony was that the DA and its psychologist attempted to discredit the prior psych evaluation, the psychologist and Stan himself. Again, this is my interpretation, based on the lengthy conversation I had with Lisa today. After nine hours of testimony on Monday, the judge recessed and said he would have his decision today, Wednesday, December 3.

And that decision was, despite recognition of some cognitive challenges, Stan was competent to stand trial and would need to work with his attorney to overcome any communication obstacles.

According to Lisa, now that a pretrial date has been set, Stan and his attorney will move into defense-planning mode despite the cognitive and communications challenges Stan faces.

“He’ll continue with his therapy so he can do the best he can when the time comes to defend himself,” said Lisa. “Despite everything going on, he’s trying to relax and allow his brain to heal.”

We will continue to share information about Stan Romanek’s case as it develops.

    1. Its my understanding, that Stan was attacked. No one said he wad in a fight. Stan’s few memories are of being hit with something, a white truck, and the attacker wearing a dark blue UNIFORM shirt. The unknown assailant that the police were looking for was never found??. So , saying that it was not consistent with a fight, was a controversial way to say that the scene was exactly as Stan said it was. There was no fight, he was blind sided /hit in the head with a beer bottle by a coward in the dark, and it was apparently lights out for the rest of the beating.
I personally believe nothing these police say and only1 /4 of the newspaper reports.

  1. Had no idea Stan’s injuries were so horrific. Best wishes for a full recovery!

I have a question regarding the mental evaluation. The Loveland-Herald is reporting that the DEFENSE ATTORNEY requested the second mental evaluation. However, according to your blog above, Lisa Romanek states the the DA (District Attorney?) requested a second evaluation (after the first report claimed Stan was not yet competent).

DA – meaning ‘defense attorney’ or District Attorney? In other words, did the defense attorney ask for BOTH evaluations, or did the defense attorney ask for the first evaluation, with District Attorney then asking for the second?

The defense attorney requested a new competency evaluation be conducted by the Department of Human Services after having reviewed the evaluation from the psychologist hired by the Public Defender’s Office.

The judge accepted the request and ordered an evaluation to be conducted at the Colorado Mental Hospital in Pueblo on an out-patient basis.

    Romanek will appear in court again Oct. 2 at 10:30 a.m. . . .

    1. The first psych review was conducted by the public defender, Stan’s attorney. After the results of that evaluation suggested that Stan was not competent to stand trial at that time, the District Attorney (DA) requested the second evaluation, which contradicted the initial evaluation.

      1. Thanks for the reply. Your response is what I thought, i.e., that it was Stan’s public defense attorney who requested the FIRST mental eval, then the District Attorney (DA) requesting the second mental eval, given that the initial eval concluded Stan was not deemed competent.

The reason I asked my question was because of this report:

FORT COLLINS — The case of Stanley Romanek, a 51-year old Loveland man facing felony child exploitation charges, was continued again on Thursday.

Loveland police arrested Romanek Feb. 13 on suspicion of possession and distribution of child pornography.

..Someone may want to notify the reporter who wrote the above that there is a difference between DEFENSE ATTORNEY and DISTRICT ATTORNEY. I believe that may be a typo, above (referencing district attorney, when they meant DA)…

  2. Sorry…meant they were referencing “defense attorney’ when they meant the District Attorney, in my last sentence.

So – according to Lisa, it was the District Attorney who asked for the second eval, NOT Stan’s public defense attorney. Big difference…

Whatever the case, all my best to Stan and Lisa. I worked in litigation for over years and completely understand the emotional toll it takes on all parties when involved in litigation.

  3. i belive Stan and lisa, they (the gov) do not want the truth to come out. and i know what iam talking about. they plant everything , and hit him hard, but do not matter the truth will come out. shame for us… we must defend stan and lisa.

    god speed !!

  4. Hoping to hear some news. Not sure how his wanting to be declared incompetent helps his case and proves his innocence. Wonder why the aliens have done nothing to help him if he was so important. Seems they are not so wise in choosing him and perhaps their plans to help us aren’t such a good thing. Then again maybe their goals are not at all what they have told him [us?]?

    1. Oh you again with your weak trolling attempts. You’re just sporadically checking in to try to stir something up. Boring procedure.

  5. Forgot to add Stan’s web site has been down for more than a month. Would be another bad sign except nothing adding new to it since last September. Jon let him know (Stan wasn’t aware of it) but nothing has changed.

  6. Is there any word on the pre-trial hearing that was supposed to occur this past January or any update at all on the disposition of Stan’s case? The post that Lisa had made to her site is entirely wiped and there is little to no mention of it on the web.

    1. The pre-trial hearing did occur, and Stan was determined fit to stand trial. The trial is currently scheduled for some time in October.

    2. I think i’ve read on Lisa’s FB page that she wasn’t even let in herself, so i guess they don’t want any outside reporting going

  7. Still wonder why the aliens haven’t swooped in to “save” him … they obviously are trying to obey the prime directive? That don’t’ fit either. I am beginning to think they don’t think at all like we do and their objectives must be entirely different than what we think they are or should be. Maybe saving us is just not an option?

  8. Stan is being framed up and silenced by the powers that be. He is getting the poop end of the stick. The police cannot be trusted, the whole criminal ” just us” system is fraudulent and corrupt to the core. He claimed to be attacked by the police, so no wonder the assailant was never found and the dirty cops investigating are trying to make him out to be a liar. How do you completely destroy someone’s reputation and credibility? Accuse them of kiddie porn…
